The Proper Distance Project

In this space of hospitality, students of Communication Theory from different schools share their understanding of how the media can be too close, too far, and, in ideal moments, both close and far. In so doing, it is hoped that they contribute to the negation of a mediapolis of complicity and collusion and the fostering of a mediapolis of understanding.

TOO FAR
1.) the Jonas Brothers. the Jonas Brothers are found to be wearing each of their "purity rings" which they claim to represent their promise to keep themselves pure before marriage. many people reacted negatively after finding out about that. they started teasing these boys gay for actually keeping their virginity, when theyre supposed to be rockstars with machismo images. what these people dont understand is that hoes dont really make bros, there is more to than what meets what is seen oustide.
2.) Pres. candidate John Mc Cain. critics tag him as a George Bush junior and is a pro-war advocate. what they dont really look into is his real plans for the country and that he prioritizes the economy. its not because he is a Republican, doesnt mean that he will follow Bush's footsteps.
3.) Pres. candidate Barack Obama. they say he can do nothing and is a neophyte in politics. what people dont see is his capability for change! lol.

Natural disasters like landslides and tsunamis have taken millions of lives from all over the world. As the media shows these victims as desperate and hopeless to millions of people around the world, the audience feel pity and expressed their sympathy through donations and other outreach programs led by institutions.

Prying on Hollywood celebrities’ private lives has become somewhat of an addiction to a lot of people including people outside the U.S. With the collage of pictures, we will be able to see that the paparazzi and the public make such a big deal about even just the simple normal things they do. Because of this, they are deprived of privacy and personal space.

First and second picture: American Idol and America’s Next Top Model
Even though the shows were labeled as “American” programs, they still considered other races to participate, giving proper attention to their talent or cultural value.

Third picture: South-African children in school
The media frequently gives its attention to the sufferings of African children. However, the picture at the bottom of the collage illustrates that there are also children who are educated. The picture did not neglect that other image of African children.

1. Too Close

PINK (Singer) Debra Messing Britney Spears

Here are the descriptions of these pictures as written in the websites:

First Picture: “Sorry to say this but Pink looks like a 15 year old boy with tits.”
Second/Third Picture: “Debra Messing’s ugly ass and little nipples “
Fourth Picture: No description (Britney Spears)

These pictures were taken in secrecy and without the permission of the said celebrities. But still these paparazzi pictures have been posted on the internet and the said celebrities had not done anything for the photos to be private. These photos were the instances wherein the celebrities were having private matters but paparazzi publicized them. Paparazzi were very inconsiderate about the fact that they have their social life, they spend quality time with the people they want to hang out with and they go to places they want to be in. And most importantly, these “celebrities” are also human. That though they are rich, famous celebrities, they are still human, that do some things an ordinary human does.

2. Too Far

Ayman Al-Zawahiri Muhammad Atef Michael Jackson
Here are the descriptions of these pictures:
First Picture: Al-Zawahiri is a physician and the founder of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. This organization opposes the secular Egyptian Government and seeks its overthrow through violent means. Al-Zawahiri is believed to now serve as an advisor and doctor to Usama Bin Laden and is currently thought to be in Afghanistan.
Second Picture: Muhammad Atef has been indicted for his alleged involvement with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya.
Third Picture: This is an actual photo – not doctored – of Michael Jackson in a court appearance this week defending himself against charges that he backed out concert appearances. The judge made him take his surgical mask off.
These people are being judged by the world as if they aren’t human anymore. Those (first and second pictures) people are terrorists but by calling them such, we tend to think of them as a demon. As if there is nothing in his being human is acceptable and in capable of being liked or even loved. We have already judged their personality that in fact we only know so little of them. Same with Michael Jackson, even though we know he is talented and all that, we judge him as if he is a monkey because of the way he looks. But we don’t really know anything about him personally. But with pictures and descriptions like this, we tend to forget that THEY ARE STILL HUMAN regardless of the little negative information about them and how they appear in the outside.

3. Proper Distance

Ashlee Simpson Rachel Stevens Mandy Moore

Descriptions:

First picture: Ashlee’s 21st birthday in Vegas
Second Picture: Rachel Stevens wearing a sexy red dress
Third Picture: Mandy Moore looking Smokin' HOT

These pictures can be in line with the Proper Distance because the celebrities were aware of the photography during these times that they were being pictured. And there were no description that insults the celebrities in the website where these are posted. The descriptions even made the photos appropriate because the media used proper terms and also proper shots of the pictures.
